You`ve probably heard of The Big Event, but have you heard of The Big Health Event? It`s a free student-led community health fair that serves the Brazos Valley, and @tamunursing students hosted the second annual occurrence last month in College Station!

The Big Health Event aims to make routine health screenings and resources more accessible to the community. Student volunteers from Texas A&M Health come together to offer the public blood pressure screenings, glucose checks, health education and more.

The Big Health Event’s officer team is already looking at how they can improve the event for next year. They are passionate about continuing and improving upon the event to serve community members in the most thorough way possible. We look forward to seeing how The Big Health Event grows and evolves in the years to come!

Will a post-meal nap be in order after your Thanksgiving feast tomorrow? We’ve often wondered whether it was the turkey that makes us so sleepy on Thanksgiving Day, and an expert from @tamunursing explains the myth.

Even though your turkey has L-tryptophan, an amino acid, a protein building block, and a precursor to the sleep hormone melatonin, Matt Hoffman, FNP, says the real culprit is usually the overwhelming carbohydrate intake.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, carbohydrate-heavy meals make L-tryptophan more available to the brain, which then leads to the process of creating melatonin and making us drowsy.

Other factors are also involved, such as alcohol consumption and feeling relaxed around loved ones. Some tips for a healthier approach to Thanksgiving are at the link in our bio!

On this #NationalRuralHealthDay, join us in celebrating the birthday of the Rural and Community Health Institute (RCHI)! 🎉 For 20 years, the institute has been supporting health professionals and facilities in rural areas across the nation, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to the people who rely on them.

Exciting news: RCHI, the School of Medicine (@tamumedicine) and the School of Nursing (@tamunursing) have secured state funding to enhance programming for rural health care in Texas. The new initiative entails workforce development, K-12 pathway education, alternative care models, and comprehensive technical assistance. The programs are designed to address the needs and challenges of rural health care, such as limited resources, a smaller workforce and financial viability. Stay tuned for more info on this in the coming weeks!

Lupita Ovalle had no energy, slept too much and had sore knees from carrying around extra weight. When she was diagnosed with diabetes in 2021, she joined the Diabetes Education Program offered through Texas A&M Healthy South Texas in McAllen. Now, Lupita says she is at the right weight, has lowered her blood sugar and cholesterol levels and has more energy than she had several years ago.

"Now I’m making better food choices and am more active than ever,” she said. “I take yoga classes, do stretching exercises and enjoy water aerobics. In the program, I learned how important exercise is in diabetes management, and now I exercise several times a week.”
