COM Student Elected OSR National Delegate

College of Medicine student Jim Littlejohn was elected as one of five national delegates to the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) at the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC)’s annual meeting in November 2004.

College of Medicine Hires Director of Institutional Advancement

The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine has hired Tom Pool as director of institutional advancement, effective July 1, 2004. He comes to the College from the Texas A&M Foundation, which directs university-wide, major gift fund raising activities and asset management services for Texas A&M University in College Station.

Medical Students Receive Scott & White Scholarships

Four medical students at the College of Medicine of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center received Scott & White Medicine Scholarships during a special presentation in the College of Medicine lobby in Temple on June 16. John Starr, M.D., professor of medicine, awarded a $2,000 scholarship to each of the following: fourth-year medical students Kit Y. Lim and Chris Kneip, and third-year medical students Monty Shah and Jedidiah J. Gisel.

College of Medicine, CHRISTUS Spohn Forge New Ties

The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine and CHRISTUS Spohn Health System are pleased to announce their affiliation to train medical residents in the Coastal Bend. A press conference marking the official announcement of affiliation will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2004, at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial, 2606 Hospital Boulevard (Lower Level Auditorium), in Corpus Christi.

COM Dean Receives Top Psychiatry Award

Christopher C. Colenda, M.D., M.P.H., dean of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine, has won the American Psychiatric Association (APA)’s Jack Weinberg Memorial Award for Geriatric Psychiatry. Dr. Colenda was presented with this prestigious award at the 2004 APA National Meeting in New York City on Monday, May 3.

COM Student Doubles Up on “Best Student” Awards

A second-year student at The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine, Christopher Brett Nelson, has won the Best Student Awards in his anatomy and physiology classes. Nelson, a native of Duncan, Oklahoma, received the honors for posting the highest average scores in the classes.

COM Staffer Returns from Iraq Duty

The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine proudly welcomes back Sergeant Matthew Maddox, a laboratory attendant at the college who recently returned from a 14-month tour of duty in the U.S. Army Reserves which included a year with the Army’s Military Police in Iraq.

College of Medicine’s Dean Honored with “Alumni Star” Award

Christopher C. Colenda, M.D., M.P.H., Dean of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine, has been named as Virginia Commonwealth University’s 2003 Alumni Star in Medicine. Dr. Colenda is an alumnus and former faculty member at VCU’s Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine.
