Dr. Dickey named chair-elect of AAHC Board of Directors

(WASHINGTON) — Arthur H. Rubenstein, MBBCh, executive vice president for the health system, dean of the school of medicine, and Robert G. Dunlop professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has been named chair of the board of directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers.

Dr. Rubenstein served as dean of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York before assuming his current position at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. A prominent endocrinologist, he has received international recognition for his groundbreaking diabetes research and excellence in academic leadership. Dr. Rubenstein has led the Association of Professors of Medicine, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

The author of over 350 publications, he has held editorial advisory positions with numerous respected journals. Dr. Rubenstein is a Fellow of the College of Medicine in South Africa and of the Royal College of Physicians in London, a Master of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Institute of Medicine.

Nancy W. Dickey, MD, president of the Texas A&M Health Science Center and vice chancellor for health affairs for the Texas A&M University System, has been named chair-elect of the board of directors.

A former dean and current professor of family and community medicine in the college of medicine, Dr. Dickey is past president of the American Medical Association and founding program director of the Family Practice Residency of the Brazos Valley. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Scott & White Hospital Foundation, and has served on the National Institutes of Health’s Advisory Council on Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Dickey is also a member of the Institute of Medicine.

She holds five honorary doctoral degrees, including a Doctor of Science from the University of Massachusetts and a Doctor of Laws from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Dickey is editor-in-chief of the patient education segment of Medem, an Internet-based patient-physician interface, and editor of The Journal of Patient Safety.

Newly elected to the board for three-year terms are Barbara Atkinson, MD, executive vice chancellor and executive dean of the school of medicine of the University of Kansas Medical Center, and John Fernandes, DO, MBA, president of the center for health sciences at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences and dean of the college of osteopathic medicine.

The Association of Academic Health Centers is a national, non-profit organization that seeks to improve health and well-being through vigorous leadership of the nation’s academic health centers.
