HSC students respond to Fort Hood shooting with fundraiser

Moved by the tragedy of the Fort Hood shootings Nov. 5, students from the Texas A&M Health Science Center Student Government Association (SGA)  joined their counterparts at Texas A&M University-Central Texas and other Texas A&M University System student representative organizations to raise money in support of the victims and their families. Each institution’s goal was to generate $50-$250 for Fort Hood relief efforts. The HSC fundraiser, called “Our Hearts are with Fort Hood,” raised $267 through the College of Medicine, School of Rural Public Health, College of Nursing and Baylor College of Dentistry.

“Students provided Valentine’s paper hearts for purchase in honor or memory of an individual, an effort similar to the paper balloons available through the Children’s Miracle Network,” said Britney Prince, SGA chair and fourth-year student at the HSC-College of Medicine.

“The students of the Texas A&M Health Science Center were moved deeply by the tragedy of the Fort Hood shootings,” Prince said. “It was our small hope that the funds raised will help to continue to offer some form of comfort and support to these families and individuals.”

Donations are still being accepted and can be mailed to The Chaplain’s Tithe and Offerings Fund c/o Student Government Association, Texas A&M University-Central Texas, 1901 S. Clear Creek Road, Killeen, Texas 76549. Make checks payable to “The Chaplain’s Tithe and Offerings Fund” or “CTOF” and include “Nov. 5th Tragedy” in the memo line.
