Recognizing excellence: Celebrating the legacy of Joy Hawkins and Michael Rossman

School of Medicine honors two former students with Distinguished Alumnus Awards

Texas A&M University School of Medicine selected Joy Hawkins, MD ’78 ’81 and Michael Rossman, MD ’94 to receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the highest honor the School of Medicine bestows upon a former student. It is awarded to former students who, through distinction in their chosen field of endeavor and dedication to the school, exemplify Texas A&M’s Core Values of Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect and Selfless Service.

Hawkins stands out as a trailblazer in anesthesiology, graduating as valedictorian from the inaugural class of the Texas A&M University School of Medicine. With an illustrious career spanning Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Hawkins has garnered recognition as a Denver “Top Doctor” and is renowned for her expertise in anesthetic management during pregnancy. Beyond her professional achievements, Hawkins is admired for her dedication to education and patient care, exemplifying the Aggie Spirit in all her endeavors.

Rossman posthumously receives this honor for his exemplary service to his country and community. A distinguished military veteran, Rossman served with distinction in the U.S. Army for 21 years, earning multiple awards for his dedication and bravery. He continued his medical service in the Bryan-College Station community upon retirement, impacting countless lives as a rheumatologist and educator. Rossman’s legacy of selflessness and compassion continues to inspire, epitomizing the core values of Texas A&M University.

Hawkins and the late Rossman embody the essence of the Aggie Spirit through their outstanding achievements and unwavering commitment to service. Their legacies will forever enrich the Texas A&M community and inspire future generations of Aggie Docs.
