SRPH faculty honored at ASPH conference

Several individuals from the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health were recognized with awards at the Association of Schools of Public Health’s 70th Annual meeting in Denver, CO. earlier this month. Regents Professor Marcia G. Ory was announced as the winner of Phillip G. Weiler Award for Leadership in Aging and Public Health. Dr. SangNam Ahn was given the Laurence G. Branch Doctoral Student Award, additionally he received Honorable Mention for the Nobuo Maeda International Research Award. Dr. Matthew Lee Smith received Honorable Mention for the Erickson Foundation Research Award.

An interprofessional team of students from the Texas A&M University Health Science Center took the stage in Minneapolis on April 12 at the national CLARION Case Competition to present their proposed solution to a simulated health challenge. Kyla Brown, a senior public health student on the team, took home the Best Presenter Award for “excellent oral presentation skills.” The team included Janet John, a first-year pharmacy student, and Ssu-Yu Yeh, a doctoral public health student.

Congrats to Dr. Jennifer Griffith for improving morale at the Texas A&M School of Public Health. The Boseph D. Gibbs Endowment for Staff and Faculty Morale was established by Dean Shawn Gibbs and his wife Neena to recognize those who make the School of Public Health a great place to work and comes with $250 for a nice dinner out. Her nominee shared this about Dr. Griffith:
“She is a walking morale booster for faculty, staff, and students at SPH. She leaves you feeling great about being at Texas A&M and the School of Public Health. During the 25th Anniversary events such as the Parents Weekend and the Gala she brought high spirits and energized everyone. She also killed it on the Dance Floor!”
