SRPH Student Hosts Haiti Relief Charity Event

Haiti ChildrenMelissa Reyna, SRPH Social and Behavioral 2nd year student, was moved by the images of catastrophe in Haiti just a few weeks ago and she felt that she needed to take action. Melissa mobilized Bryan College Station residents and hosted a concert donating over $3,000 to Doctors Without Borders.

The economy, Reyna felt, may discourage people’s desire to give but was confident that people would participate. “I realize that people are struggling financially as well… It is difficult to make a huge commitment, but my idea is maybe we can get everybody to do a little and maybe our concerted efforts can make a difference,” said Melissa.

HaitiMelissa partnered up with Cody Marx Bailey, a co-founder of The Creative Space in downtown Bryan, to coordinate an event at The Fountain Plaza in College Station. They worked with restaurants in the Plaza who each created specials and donated money to the Haitian cause.

Melissa is finishing up her degree at SRPH in May and has a strong desire to continue working with those in Haiti.
