James Robertson Jr., Ph.D., who was a cornerstone to the Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, died after complications from pneumonia on Nov. 21, 2012, in Corpus Christi, Texas. This Nov. 21 marks a year since the passing of the college’s first associate dean for student affairs.

In memory of his legacy at the Texas A&M Rangel College of Pharmacy, professional student pharmacists are organizing the Ties and Tennis Shoes Memorial 5K Walk/Run on Feb. 21, 2014. Through the event, penny wars and a T-shirt contest, students aim to raise enough funds for the Dr. James Robertson Jr. Memorial Fund to provide an endowed scholarship in honor of Robertson.

Alumni and student pharmacists can contribute, not only through participation in the race, but also through the class penny wars in November and/or by submitting a T-shirt design for the event.  The T-shirt designed that receives the most votes will be worn by participants and patrons who register for the 5K. So put those artistic brains to good use and start designing! The winner will be announced Nov. 14. The winner of the T-shirt contest will be given 2,000 pennies for their class.

Student organizers encourage all students and alumni to participate in this event.

“A student oriented event would make Dr. Robertson smile,” said Kelsi Gulick, third-year professional student pharmacist. “After all, Dr. Robertson loved his students and this school.”

Please send your designs to tshirtcontest@pharmacy.tamhsc.edu by 5 p.m. Nov. 1. To register for the 5K Walk/Run, please go to Ties and Tennis Shoes Memorial Fun Run.
