Susan Rudd Bailey joins the Texas A&M College of Medicine

Susan Rudd Bailey, MD, a 1981 graduate of the Texas A&M University College of Medicine and past president of the American Medical Association (AMA), joined the college on July 1, 2022, as special assistant to the dean. In this new position, Bailey will support the dean’s office and the school’s strategic plan by advancing recruitment and retention efforts, as well as alumni and donor relations. She will be based in Fort Worth, Texas, and will continue her private practice there as an allergist and immunologist.

Bailey has paved the way for many Aggie physicians, particularly female physicians. The 1981 class was the charter class for the College of Medicine, and Bailey was the first woman accepted to the college.

Bailey completed her residency in general pediatrics and her fellowship in allergy/immunology at Minnesota’s Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.

In 1999, she was appointed to The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents by then-Gov. George W. Bush, marking the first time a female former student had held the position.

Serving as a regent for her alma mater was just part of a long line of service for the Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M and the College of Medicine. Bailey was the president of the Tarrant County Medical Society before being elected 145th president of the Texas Medical Association (TMA). She served as speaker and vice speaker of the TMA’s House of Delegates and chaired the TMA Council on Communication and the TMA and AMA Medical Student sections.

Before becoming president-elect, Bailey served the AMA in a number of other capacities, including speaker and vice speaker of the House of Delegates, chair of the AMA Council on Medical Education, chair of the Texas delegation to the AMA and served as the AMA representative to the Assembly of the American Board of Medical Specialties. She also completed a five-year term as the AMA nominee to the board of directors of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
