Texas A&M Health Science Center expands Texas Medical Center-based Houston campus

The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents yesterday approved an initial two-year ground lease in Houston’s world-renowned Texas Medical Center to allow for expansion of the Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) Houston campus and future construction of a multidisciplinary research and education building on the acquired land.

“With this latest land acquisition, we can build upon Texas A&M’s already strong statewide presence by expanding the Aggie footprint in Houston, and in turn, bolstering interdisciplinary research and training in the most important health-related district in the world,” said A&M System Chancellor John Sharp.

The lease consists of 2.5 acres adjacent to the Albert B. Alkek Building that currently houses the TAMHSC Institute for Biosciences and Technology (IBT), a research institute that excels at translating innovative discoveries into clinical practice for the benefit of patients.

“The Houston expansion will enable even more collaborative research with other acclaimed Texas Medical Center institutions, especially in TAMHSC’s areas of excellence such as environmental health, cancer prevention through natural products, and infectious diseases. The expansion will also provide highly needed educational space for Texas A&M’s medical students and aspiring clinician scientists,” said Brett Giroir, M.D., interim executive vice president and CEO of Texas A&M Health Science Center.

Established in 1986, the Texas A&M IBT joined Texas A&M Health Science upon its founding in 1999. Today, researchers at the TAMHSC Houston campus rank among the nation’s top scientific producers.
