Residents of Milam County now have access to on-demand primary health care at no cost to them through a collaboration between Texas A&M University Health Science Center (Texas A&M Health), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and the OnMed® telehealth station. The program is part of a larger effort by Texas A&M Health to improve rural health care access and outcomes.

With financial support through the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas moonshot grant, Texas A&M Health is providing Milam County residents access to the OnMed® Care Station in Cameron, Texas, at no cost and with no requirement for health insurance. The program is effective now and runs through Dec. 31, 2022.

“In rural counties, innovations in virtual care and telehealth solutions can provide critical access to care when traditional brick and mortar clinics are disappearing and rural residents are forced to drive long distances to seek care, or worse, are foregoing care altogether,” said Joy Alonzo, PharmD, a clinical professor at Texas A&M and the primary sponsor of the OnMed Station and the overall initiative.

Texas A&M Health partnered with OnMed in 2020 to deploy this virtual health solution to answer questions about how to deliver high quality primary care in rural areas that is financially sustainable and provides a template for best practices across rural America.

The OnMed Care Station features state of the art diagnostic and interactive technologies that connect the patient to a clinician for immediate consultation and care treatment for most primary care needs. The Care Stations offer patients a safe, secure and private visit and delivers a warm and personable patient experience.

The OnMed Care Station is located in the Milam County Sheriff’s’ office and is open and available for walk-in visits Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.  and Sunday 12 p.m.-6p.m.
